A love story of Chicken Keeping
spanning over 14 years
Our chicken keeping story starts from very small beginnings of having a couple of chickens in the garden until we have grown to be a wonderful Henporium. We chose the name because it reflects a curiosity shop of what we do. We started with a couple of hens, then added some more of different types. Then we learned more and searched for hens that produce different coloured eggs.
The nice thing about hens is that there are over 350 different breeds each with an array of colour variations. Some are rarer than others. It is those more unusual breeds that we decided to specialise in once we had taken the plunge to start breeding.
Hens are fascinating creatures and Julie has been smitten. So much so that she began digging into the darkest depths of chicken keeping research to enlighten both herself and others on what makes hens tick.
Birds are a lot more complex and intelligent than most people realise. It is so easy to discount a bird because they are always “just there” in the background. However, they are just as interesting as mammals and have fun personalities too which are very individual.
We have a deep love of these beautiful and interactive birds. They are very sentient beings and we love being around them. It is very important that we give them the best life they can have. By offering courses on how to look after chickens then in our small way we can make sure that their future lives are enriched the way they should be by having knowledgable keepers.
